ChatGPT Causes Stir in Scientific Community: Should AI Tools Be Listed as Authors?

Rethinking authorship conventions with the rise of AI writing

I wrote this in an article last month:

AI has been and will continue to be a tool that writers embrace. You may even see institutions requiring AI programs to be included in citations.

The recent emergence of AI tools like ChatGPT in the scientific literature has sparked a heated debate among journal editors, researchers, and publishers.

While some argue that ChatGPT and other AI tools do not fulfill the criteria for authorship, others are pushing for new policies and conventions to acknowledge their contributions.

Here are a few of my thoughts on this topic:

  • It’s important to remember that authorship carries legal responsibility, so only people should be listed as authors on scientific papers.
  • However, that doesn’t mean we should completely ignore the contributions of AI tools like ChatGPT. Publishers should consider acknowledging them in sections other than the author list.
